The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the recall of over 480,000 vehicles. The recall includes vehicles in both the U.S. and Canada, and the reason for this is a potential manufacturing issue that could lead to an engine failure. According to NHTSA documents, 443,899 vehicles are recalled in the U.S, while Nissan confirmed to Associated Press that 37,837 units are affected in Canada.
Nissan is recalling certain cars in the U.S. and Canada because of a possible problem with engine bearings in some VC-Turbo engines. This defect can cause engine damage or even complete engine failure, which could make driving unsafe.
The issue affects vehicles with 3-cylinder 1.5-litre or 4-cylinder 2-litre VC-Turbo engines. If the engine bearings fail, the engine might lose power or stop working while driving, increasing the risk of an accident. However, Nissan says these failures usually happen slowly. Drivers may notice warning signs like strange noises from the engine, rough running, dashboard warning lights, or messages before the engine fails completely. Nissan will inspect and repair or replace affected engines for free. Owners will get a letter about the recall and should take their cars to a dealer if they notice any warning signs.
According to Associated Press, in an email statement, Nissan announced that beginning in late August, it will mail notification letters to owners of affected vehicles. These letters will provide details on how to schedule inspections and, if necessary, repairs at authorised Nissan or Infiniti dealerships.
The affected Nissan and Infiniti models that are powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder or 2-litre 4-cylinder VC-Turbo engines, include the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue (348,554 U.S. units, 26,592 Canada units), 2019-2020 Nissan Altima (5,685 U.S. units), 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 (84,536 U.S. units), and 2022 Infiniti QX55 (5,124 U.S. units).
If inspections reveal no engine debris, Nissan dealers will take specific actions based on the engine type for recalled vehicles. For models equipped with the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, technicians will replace the oil pan gasket and engine oil and update the engine control module software. For vehicles with the 2-litre 4-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, dealers will only replace the engine oil.
