Why car enthusiasts hate new cars

The relationship between car enthusiasts and new vehicles has soured. Walk into a dealership today and you will find interiors that look like Tesla showrooms, massive screens where buttons used to be, and automatic transmissions as the only option on most models. For people who actually love driving, modern cars feel less like machines to control and more like smartphones on wheels. The disconnect is not nostalgia. The complaints are grounded in...

Trade deal may open doors for US cars but right-hand-drive rules limit options

The interim India–US trade agreement could significantly reduce import duties on large-capacity vehicles but its real-world impact on the Indian car market is expected to be minimal. Most US-made cars are not compatible with Indian driving laws, which mandate right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles. Under the proposed deal, India will initially lower tariffs on diesel cars above 2,500cc and petrol cars above 3,000cc to 50 percent before reducing them...

This truck doesn’t exist in America - we bought it anyway

We fly to Dubai to buy a brand-new Land Cruiser 70 pickup that America never gets, expecting it to be bulletproof. Instead we discover nonstop problems - death wobble, broken hubs, four-low refusing to engage when we actually need it, and AC that barely exists in the desert. After pushing deeper into the Leewa dunes and limping back toward civilization, the trip turns into a lesson in how quickly a dream vehicle can become a liability. By the end, we realize the bigger story is not just the truck - it’s how hard it is to film anything wild in a place where the rules close in from every direction.

Govt scraps small car concessions in emission norms; Maruti seen most impacted

The government has reportedly removed proposed concessions for small cars from its upcoming fuel efficiency and emission norms, following pushback from major automakers. The revised rules will apply uniformly across all vehicles from April next year and aim to accelerate emission cuts and EV adoption. While the broader auto outlook remains strong, the move could be negative for Maruti Suzuki, given its high exposure to petrol-powered small cars. Market expert Ambareesh Baliga say automakers may need to rethink strategies as smaller EVs gain market share under tighter regulations.

Could electric cars have a manual transmission?

This is the second video of a five part series where I’ve partnered with Formula E to answer questions about electric vehicles, and this topic was actually inspired by Renault’s season 2 Formula E car, which uses a 2-speed gearbox matched with a single transversely mounted electric motor. What’s super clever about their set up, is that they have incorporated a manual gear stick, using cables and rods to switch between the two gears, rather than the pneumatic paddle shifters which other teams were using. Renaults solution is simpler, and also lighter, as it doesn’t require onboard pumps or air-tanks for gear shifts. But could this be taken a step further, and incorporate a clutch as well for street cars? I spent some time chatting with the current Formula E champion, Lucas Di Grassi, who spends his free time engineering electric bikes, about this idea. We have two questions to answer: 1. Is it possible? 2. Is it logical?
